I use Nova Launcher and then press and hold the topmost widget on the home screen and resize it to gain back the space and move the widget where the google search was. At the top of the screen will be the Google Search bar. Tap and hold it and an option to remove will appear. Google wants its Assistant service to be successful. So, they've put the little microphone icon on their Search bar with the hope that you'll use it thanks to its convenient placement.

Now that you have successfully removed the bar and found yourself missing it, there are a few ways to get it back. This thread could be made a sticky, it would save a lot of time for everyone. There, the first option you can change is the Search Bar, turn it off. Press the three dots again to minimize the menu, hit back and that's it.
The only solution is to install a 3rd party launcher. Google has messed with this and now there IS no ‘google search’ in the apps TO disable. So I guess the last remaining option is a new home screen launcher.

A launcher on Android is an app that will allow you to customize and tweak your device beyond that of the default launcher installed. Each device manufacturer has its own default launcher, but there are some really good third party launchers. Download a different launcher , press home and select holo or other, to use it, then set it up. There will be an option to disable persistent search bar.
I removed the google search bar from my Xperia Z3 hoping that it would provide more space on the homescreen for apps and widgets, but nooooooo.. The unused space on the top of the screen is even more annoying so I would like to get the search bar back. Is there anyone who has figured out how to do this yet?? I tried everything and there is nothing I can find on the internet about this.. Not sure if this will work for everyone, but figured I’d share what I did for mine (I’m on Android 4.4.2). It was much simpler, and so far it didn’t cause me any problems. Enable Developer Options, go to ‘Select runtime’, and change to ART . This also helps optimize your runtime, and battery life, I heard.
The first method is to turn off Google Now altogether. You can do this by launching Google Now and tapping on the menu button followed by Settings. Toggle the Google Now switch to off and accept the warning that your cards will be reset.
Using a custom launcher (no root required) #
Several options should pop, including Settings. Drag the widget up to the top of the screen and over the Remove icon and text. Drag and drop the Search bar from inside the folder to a suitable space on one of your home screens. If you are running a Nexus phone you could try sideloading the new Nexus Launcher APK. Lightning Launcher is also a good alternative, very fast and customisable. If you are looking for something closer to stock, try Nova Launcher.
However, most custom ROMs allow you to remove the annoying Google Search bar by simply deleting it like you would delete any other homescreen widget. If you are not afraid to root your phone, then you can always opt for a custom ROM. A ROM is like a replacement of the firmware provided by the manufacturer.

Even if your phone has its own custom UI, as in Samsung, Sony, Huawei, Xiaomi, etc. chances are that you will still find the search bar on your home screen. While some users find these quite useful, others consider it to be un-aesthetic and wastage of space. If you are one of them, then this article is for you. If you cannot find any workable options on your Settings, you can try to directly disable the Google App on your phone to get rid of the Google search bar.
