Nexus Player Wikipedia

The lack of an optical digital audio output jack will be a bigger deal to those who have high-quality audio systems, but don’t necessarily use an A/V receiver to do all their video switching. If the Nexus Player’s single HDMI output is run directly to a TV, that means the only way to get audio to a sound bar or receiver is by way of the TV’s digital audio output, which typically sounds much worse. Out of the box, the Nexus Player lacks the Fire TV’s premium feel. While the Fire TV has that soft, sleek, almost rubbery silicone coating on both the box and its included remote, the Nexus Player and its remote are covered in rather pedestrian matte black plastic. On the plus side, the Nexus Player’s base is coated in anti-skid rubber, and the puck feels pretty solid. We can’t help but worry it will have a tough time taking more than just a couple of spills off a table onto a hard floor (a regular occurrence at this reviewer’s home).

Again, the problem with Android TV's search is that results from Netflix, Hulu Plus and other apps are not returned. Instead you're just funneled once more to results from Google TV and Movies, Google Music or YouTube. As is often the case, however, their usefulness varied per app. They worked fine for searches within Netflix, for example, but didn't accept letter entries on Hulu Plus. Once Android TV adds the inevitable Web browser, they'll prove more useful. The included physical remote is infinitely better than Chromecast's, because it actually exists.

Chromecast vs. Nexus Player: Google’s new streaming puck isn’t worth the upgrade yet

In fact, you could mask a multitude of sins by just treating the Nexus Player as a (£50 more expensive) Chromecast. Simply put, Android TV looks like it needs more time in the oven. It starts off well enough, where appearances are concerned. The interface is pretty and slick, as defined by Android 5.0 Lollipop’s cleanly colourful design philosophy. The world is moving toward forcing users into one ecosystem or another, which makes nonpartisan devices without skin in the game, namely Roku, that much more valuable.

As noted in Install section, v5.0 build LRX21M and LRX21V don't seem to have ADB debugging options (i.e. for connecting to device over a network). Also, Sideload Launcher may not be needed as sideloaded Kodi shows up under Apps on Nexus Player's main screen. Nexus Player is an x86-64 (64-bit Intel Atom CPU) based Android digital media player co-developed by Google and Asus. Running the Android 5.0 "Lollipop" operating system, this Nexus Player was the first device to employ Google's Android TV platform. It feels very solid in the hand, though I found the analog sticks to feel just a little bit too tight for my tastes.

Like Android for phones and tablets Android TV is "open," creating the possibility that developers will come up with ways to augment the app selection more quickly than Google itself. I tried one such early solution, Sideload Launcher by Chainfire, but couldn't find any compatible apps, or ways to get them onto the device. We were really hoping that Android TV would support universal search, and Google says that it does, but for now, none of the apps available for the Nexus Player support the device’s voice search feature. Ask the app developers at companies like Netflix and Hulu.

Until then, skip the Nexus Player and wait for Android TV to grow some teeth of its own. Until it receives a major infusion of native apps and developer support, and better integrates non-Google services, the Nexus Player with Android TV offers no compelling upgrade over other streaming devices. Both the Nexus Player and game controller come with batteries, and there’s a typically blocky Asus power brick for the Player, but that’s all you get.

The Nexus Player by Google is a pretty decent movie and music streamer. In fact, it could only actually be good if you were to pair it with an Android tablet or phone with the intention of streaming a much wider variety of media content. In fact, it does not feature an app library that its rivals have.

It is the second media player in the Google Nexus family of consumer devices. Originally running the Android 5.0 ("Lollipop") operating system, it is the first device to employ the Android TV platform. The Nexus player supports Google Cast, the feature for selecting and controlling media playback on a television that was first introduced by Chromecast.

It was the first set-top box to operate Android TV. It is Google’s new media box and its counterpart for the Apple TV as well as the Roku 3. Voice search is powered by Google Now, and can do anything a smartphone or tablet with Google Now can, apart from making calls, sending messages, or actually Googling a question. 20 mm (0.79 in) HMass235 g (8.3 oz)PredecessorNexus QSuccessorChromecast with Google TVWebsiteAsus websiteThe Nexus Player is a digital media player co-developed by Google, Intel and Asus.

What it took to recognize the name was uninstalling the Google Home app and reinstalling it. So, I would like to call my Nexus Player "Living Room" whenever I cast to it, but everytime I add it it just shows up as Nexus Player. If you haven’t previously installed adb and fastboot, you can download them from Google. Some familiarity with basic Android operation and terminology. It would help if you’ve installed custom roms on other devices and are familiar with recovery.

If you ask me, Chromecast or other discreet streaming sticks are a far better option than a Smart TV, since these devices are more easily upgraded or can be replaced with newer versions at a relatively nominal cost. As compared to previous types of media boxes, this one by Google is crafted exclusively to download and stream videos as well as music from the Internet. But then again, Google Nexus Player is also so much more than that. In fact, it runs a brand new TV-optimized form of Android 5. So that means that it actually goes well together with a wide range of Android apps which are available in the Google Play Store. Google’s Nexus Player is not only a home media player that is used for streaming Netflix but also a device which can be used for playing games on your TV.

No cables are included, and instructions are limited to a single card with two pictures on it. We suppose Google thinks everyone’s got this whole set-top box setup thing figured out. The game controller feels much better made than the Nexus Player’s stick remote, but its D-pad offers a less satisfying “click” than the Fire TV’s controller does. We also noticed that the Nexus Player’s game pad remote does not have hot-keys for play, pause, fast forward, or reverse. The voice search is handy if you want to bring up a specific YouTube video, but it doesn't let you access YouTube channels.

On the other hand, the Nexus Player supports the latest Wi-Fi standard (802.11ac) which is capable of more than double the throughput of the prior 802.11n standard. The frustrating lack of an Ethernet jack is compounded by the fact that Android TV clearly supports such a connection, evidenced by an Ethernet option in the settings menu. The remote is a plain 5.4-inch matte black wand that apes the Fire TV's remote in layout and design. It has a prominent circular navigation pad with a selection button in the middle flanked a Voice Search button above, and Back, Play/Pause, and Home buttons below. A small microphone above the Voice Search button lets you speak into the remote to look for media.

PCMag supports Group Black and its mission to increase greater diversity in media voices and media ownerships. It is powered by a 1.8GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z3560 processor with 1GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 8 GB of internal eMMC storage. On May 24, 2016, Google discontinued direct sales of the Nexus Player. In May 2017, Google announced that Google Assistant was coming to the Nexus Player later in the year. In November 2017, the device was updated with the Google Assistant feature through the monthly security update. In March 2018, Google confirmed that the Nexus Player would not receive Android 9 Pie and that security updates had also ended for the device.

I still have hope that Android TV can be a similarly agnostic and recommendable platform, but right now it simply isn't. But if you're someone who enjoys that sort of thing, the Nexus Player should work just as well as the Fire TV. As with Fire TV, the most impressive feature of the Nexus Player was a voice search that consistently, correctly recognized stuff I said. I conducted a brief test comparing the two boxes' voice search and they were both very good at recognizing TV show title names, for example. I tried connecting a Windows 7 PC via USB, but nothing happened. A quick search for "Android TV drivers" came up empty, aside from leading me to the page for the Android TV developer box, the ADT-1.
